Unit 5 Connections

When asked what the connection of spiritual wellness is to mental and physical wellness means, I found myself in a quandary.  I suppose it goes back to self-worth.  If I don't feel connected, loved unconditionally or worthy of receiving any love from my higher power, it will affect me mentally, possibly cause depression or other mental disorders such as paranoia.  If I am unhealthy mentally, I won't be motivated to take care of my physical body, I don't believe when you are mentally disturbed you care about what you eat, if you eat at all, or how you look.  Therefore, spiritual wellness is as dependent on mental and physical wellness as each of these are dependent on spiritual wellness.  As I heard someone say recently, "You must come full circle to find the truth", all three of these aspects are reliant upon each other in the same manner.

I completely agree with you I think all three areas of wellness are interconnected. When any one of them is neglected the others will suffer.

  2. Jada,
I completely agree as well with what you noted. A person can be healthy physically, but if mentally and spiritually unsatisfied, the person will have great suffrage. I have many patients that are very healthy, however, due to severe depression, they suffer severely and that affects their physical health. It just goes back to needing to treat not only the body, but the mind.

  3. Hey Jada,

I enjoyed reading your post. You made some valid points. I also agree everything does go together and is connected. Your mental state absolutely can affect your physical state. It is just common sense. The better you feel about yourself and others, the better care you will take care of yourself.

  4. Hi Jada,
Spiritual, mental, and physical wellness are definitely all connected, as you pointed out, and it is important, I think, to have balance in those areas. Spending equal time to develop each area and growing in each.

  5. I agree with you Jada. I think that it is essential to be balanced to experience a fullness in life. Many people get off track mentally because they focus on the things in life that they either don't have or don't have enough of; well, if you are more spiritually sound, you are able to distinguish happiness as a result of material possessions versus happiness on a higher plane which will allow you to be happy with no regard to possessions. I feel that it is this type of spiritual and mental health that affect the physical well-being of an individual. I know you probably have heard that one of the biggest silent killers is stress. High and unresolved levels of stress can cause a person's immune system to weaken, they can lose weight, lose hair, etc. These would be physical examples of a breakdown in mental health. I, like you, feel that they all tie in to each other and one can definitely affect the others be it in a positive or negative way.

  6. I enjoyed reading your post. I agree that having a unhealthy mind can cause all kinds of issues. I know if I am filled with negative thoughts and feelings it is hard for me to show loving kindness to others. What a difference it can make on you mentally when others show you loving kindness.

  7. I think that you said it right, if we are unhealthy mentally, then we will be unhealthy spiritually as well as physically. We need to get our mind right and on track before we can fix any other aspect of our lives. I think finding that inner-peace will be difficult but it can be done, with a little determination and hard work.
